Postmortem

Our typical system upgrade windows last 2-3 hours. We started the upgrade process as planned at 6:00 PM Central on Sunday October 18th, 2020.

For this specific upgrade, we made some structural changes to the database associated with some of the improvements and also to prepare for the upcoming hosting move. We anticipated these changes taking approximately an hour to apply.

In actuality, these database changes took 10+ hours, which did not include the other related upgrade tasks. This was completely unanticipated or we would have started the upgrade earlier in the weekend, giving us significant additional time.

The database updates / conversion process finished at approximately 7:45 AM and the site was brought back online at 8:15 AM. We sincerely apologize for the extended outage and especially for affecting business hours.
